Already on the journey to Aswan it becomes clear that Nubia is not any more like Egypt: The landscape is wilder, the Nile nested in the rock. While Luxor placed a first archaeological accent at the beginning of the trip with the Valley of the Kings and the abundance of the worship sites in only one place, one could say, Aswan gives place to the picturesque one. Aga Khan, the intellectual chief of the Ishmaelite, could be buried here after his death in 1957, because it is “the most beautiful place of the earth”, as he said. His widow deposited each day a rose in his Mausoleum, until she will follow him in 2000.
The Old Cataract hotel and its magic atmosphere, makes part of the most famous hotels of the country. From the terrace, one has a spectacular sight on the Elephantine island and the Mausoleum of Aga Khan. The essential chapters of the famous novel of Agatha Christie “Murder on the Nile” were written in the Old Cataract hotel.
Also Philae, the second most important island of the lake in Aswan, and the Temple of Isis, also called “the pearl of the Nile”, make Aswan an unavoidable destination.
