The lbis Catacombs

Lateperiod/Ptolemaic period, 6th-1st century B.C.

A short distance from the tomb of petosiris the visitor can descend, through an unre- mark able entrance, to the subterranean galleries of the animal cemetery. This complicated network of corridors and chambers once served as a place of both veneration and burial for hamadryad baboons and ibis—animals sacred to thoth, the god of wisdom. The mummified remains of ibis were frequently brought to the site in simple terracotta jars, hundreds of which were then stacked on top of each other in a rock chamber; painted wooden coffins and small limestone sarcophagi were also often used to hold the corpses. The early Ptolemaic kings built several cult chambers with reliefs and sacrificial altars in the galleries, and these are presently being investigated by a team of archeologists from Munich, Germany.
